Letter to Representative Delahunt

Written for Requirement 8, Cit. in the Nation.

Dear Representative Delahunt,
I’m sending this email to express my opinion on the energy crisis facing our country today. America’s dependence on fossil fuels as our major source of energy  is the real problem behind the energy crisis and rising oil prices. Most people seem to think that the problem can be attributed to the war in Iraq, or to greedy oil companies. While these factors may contribute to the problem, the real issue lies with our complete dependence on fossil fuels. Our government should be pouring money into research into the development of existing forms of alternative energy, and research into new forms of fueling our country’s massive demand for energy. The government should be sponsoring the advancement of alternative fuels so that they won’t be viewed as “alternative” fuels, but as just “fuels”. As just another method for powering a car, turning on lights, and generating heat. If our country continues to provide funding to fossil fuel companies, nothing will change. The country needs to accept other forms of fuel, and this change needs to happen soon. Oil won’t last forever, and when it finally runs dry, our country will need another form of energy to turn to. If we take steps now to develop and research other forms of energy, we will be prepared when the Middle East cannot support our energy needs any longer.

Thank you,
David Howland
